Depending on the usage we tend to use the following grasses:

  1. Saint Augustine and varieties like Floratam or Palmetto
  2. Bahia
  3. Specialty Grasses like Zoysia and variations like Empire, Empress or Zorro
  4. Specialty Bermuda Grasses like Celebration, 419 (aka Tiftway 419) and Latitude 36

The choice of which grass to use is somewhat determined by several requirements and tolerances, mainly

  • Region - Our region is warm, humid and sandy with lots of drainage, mostly.
  • Drought resistance - we go through periods of it here.
  • Cold tolerance - hasn't been much of that around lately
  • Shade tolerance
  • Insect/Disease resistance
  • If it can stand heavy traffic in installations where there would be heavy traffic

There are more, but these are probably the most important. When you ask for a quote, since we have 25 years experience, we already know most of the answers to these, except  for a couple questions such as "Are you expecting light or heavy foot traffic (or even car traffic) where we are putting the grass? followed by "How much shade is the grass going to get?

Many people will get one of the Saint Augustine varieties or the Bahia.  The specialty Zoysias are  a group that needs regular maintenance. The Bermudagrasses are used when there is likely to be lots of traffic and as such are great for golf courses, athletic fields, equestrian and polo venues. In fact, Celebration Bermudagrass is advertised as having "Divot Recovery" and "Reduced player injury due to lower surface hardness".  Actually it might be good for a family that plays touch football a lot!!
